The Mom Who Became the Guide
Hi, I'm Melissa Summers
I spent 16 years as a certified occupational therapy assistant working with kids whose nervous systems processed the world differently. I watched brilliant, creative, deeply feeling children get reduced to a list of behaviors to fix. I watched their parents, exhausted and confused, doing everything they could, get handed strategies without understanding. I was really good at giving advice to overwhelmed parents and just expecting them to have that "aha!" moment.
Then I became a mom myself. And I realized: the gap isn't knowledge. It's translation. Parents don't need more worksheets from a therapist's office. They need someone who can sit with them in the mess of a Tuesday morning and say, "Here's what your child's body is telling you right now."
That's why I built Root & Rise Sensory Solutions. Not as a clinical practice — I intentionally stepped outside that lane. As a parent education company grounded in one belief:
When a parent truly understands their child's nervous system, everything shifts. The meltdowns stop being emergencies. The hard moments become data. And the family finds its way back to connection.
I believe every child is fearfully and wonderfully made. Their response to the loud, bright world isn't something to correct — it's something to understand. And once you do, you become the most powerful tool in their toolkit.
I work best with families who…
- feel like traditional parenting advice is too generalized.
- suspect something bigger is going on than just "behavior".
- are exhausted by meltdowns, transitions, bedtime, or school struggles.
- want understanding, not just behavior compliance.
- are ready to parent with more connection and less guilt.

What "Sensory Educator" Means
My OTA background informs the quality and accuracy of everything I teach. But Root & Rise Sensory Solutions is not a therapy practice. I don't diagnose, assess, or provide clinical treatment. I teach parents how to see their child through a sensory lens — and I walk beside them while they learn.
I call this work "Connection over Correction" because the goal was never to fix your child. It was always to understand them deeply enough that your family can bloom together.
If you’ve been wondering…
“Why does everything feel harder for my child than everyone says it should?” …you’re not imagining it. And you’re not failing.
